Playing through the David and Goliath Story

Do your kids have a favorite Bible story? My twins’ favorite story right now is David and Goliath. I think it is because they relate to the prayer: God, help me to be brave.

Bravery is something we started praying for with our girls a couple of years ago and it seems to come up all the time. For awhile any time we talked about prayer they would volunteer and say, “God, help me to be brave.” even if it didn’t fit the context. Our 2 year still does this on occasion. It’s the cutest!

Then in one of our storybook Bibles, this was the prayer that went with the story. And, voila, a favorite Bible story was created.

Purpose of Playing with David and Goliath

David and Goliath is a wonderful story for kids. It is exciting, adventurous, classic good vs. evil, has a protagonist that littles can relate to, and as always, God wins!

Also, the story provides tons of opportunities for fun and play. Children really can do lots of hands-on, experiential activities to bring God’s Word to life for them. You are only limited by your creativity on this one.

David and Goliath Flip Book

Because my twinnies love this story so much, I wanted to create a compilation of several play activities with a variety of styles and purposes. I decided to put it together in a flip book because I think those are so fun! My hope is to create more flip books with other stories, as well.

Let me introduce you to the different parts of the flip book and my heart behind it.

Read It!

The main point of this flip book is for you and your children to grow closer to God through engaging with His Word. That’s why my flip books begin with reading the stories in a variety of ways and telling the story yourselves.

Play It!

In this section, I offer you two games: a quiet game to play while settling down before bed or maybe while a sibling is napping, and a loud game because it is great for kids to use their gross motor skills and bodies when learning.

Learn It!

On the Learn It! page kids get an opportunity to learn a memory verse from the story, as well as digging into the story a little more with another fun activity.

Make It!

The Make It! page is for your budding artists and creators. On these pages are 2 projects. One project is super simple only requiring crayons or other readily available supplies. The second project will require a little bit more preparation, but something you will want to hold onto.

Pray It!

Finally, we will dig into the characters of the story a little more as we embrace our relationship with God through prayer in playful ways that will make an impression on your little ones’ hearts.

David and Goliath Flip Book Sample

Here’s a sample page from the David and Goliath Flip Book. It’s the Make It! page. My hope is that you will have a great opportunity of connecting with your kiddos as you play and create together.

I love being creative and doing art. It makes me feel closer to God. He is so very creative, and I am so drawn to that trait of his. When I get to be creative or artistic, no matter the quality, it is as if I get to reflect a small part of who he is.

David and Goliath Story Stones

Have you heard of story stones? Do you have any? My kids love playing with rocks. They also love telling stories. So, in my house these are win-win! Plus, stones have an important part to play in the David and Goliath story.

Story stones can be as simple or complex as you chose. You could use sharpies, print pictures and mod podge them, or paint on the stones. What you choose to put on them is also totally up to you and your kiddos. Have fun!

You could even take this a step further and go and hide them around your community with a verse on them. Families in our town love finding painted rocks in parks, on trails, and on the beaches. What a fun way to spread God’s love!

Conclusion

Flip books are simple way to get God’s Word into your kid’s hearts and minds by helping them to experience the story in many ways. Together, you and your kids will engage in the story with your minds, hearts, bodies, and words. The conversations to be had around these activities will be rich and meaningful.

I’d love for you to check out the flip book here. Let me know what you think and send me pics of you and your kiddos playing through the story of David and Goliath.
